GLASGOW CALEDONIAN UNIVERSITY INVESTS IN SYSTEM 5000
09 Mar 2010

Glasgow Caledonian University has invested in a Duplo System 5000 bookletmaker and DC-445 DuCreaser, as part of an upgrade program of the campus print facility.

With an increase in demand for print work, including marketing materials aimed at prospective students and internal course information packs, the decision was taken to look for a faster and more automated set-up to improve turnaround times. In 2009, as Andrew Scott, Head of Print Design Services explains, a search for print technology upgrades began.

"We had some long-standing print and finishing devices that served us well but were in need of upgrading. During busy times, we could expect up to 3,000 booklets to pass through the print room in a very short timescale, and we needed a workflow that was sufficiently fast and efficient which removed the bottlenecking. After investing in a DI press, we wanted the finishing to be equally as seamless."

Having first purchased a Duplo bookletmaker back in 1995, which lasted over 10 years, the decision was made to purchase Duplo's flagship bookletmaking solution the System 5000, consisting of a 20-station vertical collator tower, feeding into the DBM-500 bookletmaker and trimmer.

The System 5000 runs at up to 5,000 finished books an hour and is Duplo's high-end bookletmaker in its range of 20 modular solutions.

To alleviate cracking on folded thicker covers, Duplo's DC-445 DuCreaser was also purchased, explains Mr Scott.

"It is not uncommon for us to run 170gsm and above on the cover stocks, this coupled with satin finishes means that it is important that we place a crease along the fold line to avoid cracking. The good thing about the DC-445 is that it is quick to set-up, fast to run and we also have a perforation module, meaning we can branch out and offer different types of work, such as direct mail."

The DC-445 DuCreaser has a fully automatic set-up, high speed creaser with speeds up to 3,000 sheets per hour. Maximum sheet input sizes are 320 x 650mm, with stock weights up to 350gsm, and a top-feed process which gives maximised productivity.

As far as approval from the machine operator is concerned, Print Production Manager Steven McCart could not be happier;

"The bookletmaker handles our typical job size of A3 down to A4 and A4 down to A5 very comfortably. In particular, I have been very impressed with the feed of the collator towers, and set-up of the whole system is less than 60 seconds. As well as being much more automated, there is a very accurate position of the stitch, which all adds to a good quality finish."

Scott concludes "We had a good experience with Duplo equipment in the past and the 5000 is continuing the success. It has helped us become more efficient as we continue to provide a one stop shop from concept through to final product, meeting the changing needs of the organisation".
