Leatherhead based Dyer & Son have upgraded their DBM-120 hand fed booklet maker with Duplo’s customer favourite DBM-350 Digital System. They are a family run business, established in 1916 by David Dyer. The business remains in the family with its current director Chris Dyer Senior, the great grandson of the founder.
Chris Dyer says “We have been printing for over 105 years! And of my eight children two are working with the company as printers and finishers.”
“We serve the general public and businesses whether individuals or large corporations, providing a variety of printed material: booklets, leaflets, business cards, flyers, letterheads, posters, wedding stationery, invitation cards, banners, folders, mounted boards, giclee prints, etc. We use our extensive history and background to produce high quality printing, binding and finishing. Our aim is to provide a quality finish at a competitive price, with friendly customer service. The current investment is to keep up with the changing times. We are looking to speed up production to give us the ability to service more customers, more quickly. This has become particularly pressing because everybody wants their jobs done ‘now’!”
The Duplo 350 Digital Booklet System is hugely popular with digital printers as it allows collated work to be processed from multiple printers, to produce high quality booklets consistently with vastly reduced make ready times. The PC control allows jobs to be set up and recalled instantly with very little to no manual intervention. Two paper feed trays in the DSF-2200 digital sheet feeder allows the combination of main content pages with covers that have been offset printed, printed on a separate digital press, UV coated or laminated so it adds much more flexibility to the customers workflow.
“It's still early days as the new system only went in the other day but we feel that with the Dupo 350 Digital System we will be able to produce our booklets about four times quicker, says Chris Dyer. There was a need to upgrade the speed and quality of our booklet making. We like the automation of the DBM-350 – it will most certainly save our operators back (from all the manual feeding). We are a big fan of the machine’s ability to crush each booklet before delivery. This means that the booklets come out much flatter and don’t spring open. It gives our work a much more professional look and I just know our customers are going to appreciate it.”
The Dyer family are an old school proper printer with deep family values, and this is reflected throughout their business, says Adam Drummond, Regional Sales Manager for Duplo. With each generation they’ve kept up-to-date with the latest technology, and it looks like Chris Dyer Senior has set his sights on improving workflow for the two sons who joined the business in 2015 and 2016. The new booklet system will help bring automation through to their workflow and speed up their processes. Ross, our demonstrator and trainer had fun helping the team get to grips with the new system.
“Installation was done in a couple of hours and the training was top class and informative. Ben, our operator, has very quickly picked up the new machine. It is easier to use compared to our previous model because the controls are digital using Duplo’s PC control.”
“Having our suppliers keep in touch is important – just to see how things are going and sort any teething problems. We are a small print shop on the high street with a side alley entrance, but to our customers, we are hugely important. We are their experts and the services we provide are important to them so it’s necessary that we have the right equipment from the right suppliers to achieve this.”
