The Therapeutic Power of Print: Breaking the Silence Around Wellbeing

Written by Catalyst Support, March 2025

In an era where personal challenges are at an all-time high - with 1 in 4 adults experiencing significant emotional struggles each year, such as stress, anxiety, and burnout - we need innovative, accessible solutions.

Enter print: the most underestimated wellness tool of our time.

Why Print Matters in a Digital Age

While digital formats have consumed our professional and personal lives, paper continues to offer something screens cannot - a tangible connection that nurtures mindfulness and emotional balance. At Catalyst Support, we've witnessed firsthand how engaging with physical paper products can transform emotional wellbeing in ways that digital alternatives simply cannot replicate.

"There's no such thing as 'I can't draw'!" says Sandy Power, a group worker within Catalyst Support’s Community Connections, who has transformed how we think about creativity. "Many people who don't naturally pick up a pen or feel uncertain about what to create often believe they lack artistic ability. However, creativity is not about perfection - it's about expression."

The recent popularity of adult colouring books perfectly illustrates this philosophy. By giving someone a sheet of paper and encouraging them to experiment with curved lines, colours, and patterns, we unlock a unique form of personal expression. This allows the mind to switch off from everyday worries and focus on simple, soothing motions - an accessible tool available to everyone.

Journaling also stands as a powerful alternative to digital documentation. Where digital notes can be quickly deleted or buried in endless apps, a physical journal creates a lasting, intentional record of personal reflection. Writing by hand naturally slows our thought process, providing a rare opportunity to dive deeper into our experiences. Each page becomes a quiet space for unfiltered thoughts, away from the constant interruptions of screens and notifications.

Transformation Through Print

In her group sessions, Sandy demonstrates the profound potential of paper-based creativity. "I provide coloured pencils and felt tips, showing participants how to embrace the process," she explains. "While some are hesitant at first, a little encouragement helps them discover something remarkable. Before long, they're surprised and delighted by their own creations."

What begins as a simple activity can quickly evolve into something transformative. Her clients have become so engaged and proud of their work that they've created an exhibition during Mental Health Week, celebrating creativity and self-expression. The impact goes far beyond mere artistic output - it's about rediscovering one's capacity for joy, expression, and personal growth.

"The results were so impressive that we decided to display the artwork on our community hall wall for everyone to admire," Sandy recalls. "What started as a simple activity quickly became something much bigger. Our clients were so engaged and proud of their work that we wanted to showcase it further."

Breaking Through Digital Noise

For industries where personal challenges remain unspoken - particularly male-dominated sectors - paper offers a non-threatening intervention. No awkward conversations. No vulnerability exposed. Just a blank page and the freedom to explore your inner landscape.

"Art is for everyone," Sandy emphasises. "It's not about skill or talent - it's about exploration, relaxation, and the sheer pleasure of making something uniquely your own."

The rising rates of workplace burnout and emotional challenges demand creative, accessible solutions. While technology continues to fragment our attention, print stands as a simple, powerful alternative - a reminder that healing can be quiet, personal, and profound.

Put down your device. Pick up a piece of paper. Start drawing. Start writing. Rediscover yourself.
