Degn Grafisk, a prominent commercial printing company founded in 1996, has taken a significant step in modernising its operations with the acquisition of the Duplo PFi Blade B2 cutting table. This innovative solution enables the efficient automation of cutting printed rolls into sheets or strips, addressing previous manual cutting limitations that hampered productivity.

The Importance of Roll Feed Technology

The PFi Blade B2's roll feed capability is a game changer for Degn Grafisk. The company relies on their Roland wide format printer, which can kiss-cut labels but cannot cut through. Customers require labels delivered in sheets or strips, creating inefficiencies and delays in order fulfilment.

By utilising the roll feed feature of the PFi Blade B2, Degn Grafisk can now process rolls, meeting customer demands swiftly and accurately. This enhancement not only optimises the workflow but also elevates the quality of the products offered, ensuring labels are delivered in the precise formats that clients require.

Enhanced Capabilities

The PFi Blade B2, installed on April 9, 2025, allows Degn Grafisk to produce a variety of jobs, including door hangers, business cards, point-of-sale materials, calendars, boxes, and self-adhesive labels. The team can now handle run lengths from as little as 10 car strips to up to 20,000 A4 sheets of labels, all in-house.

Henrik Degn, Owner of Degn Grafisk, expressed enthusiasm over the operational enhancements enabled through this investment. "With the PFi Blade, we can significantly reduce production costs by utilizing more affordable substrates – up to 75% cheaper than those required for manual cutting. This investment not only lessens our operational costs, but it also allows larger jobs to be produced in-house, resulting in significant time and cost savings."

Streamlined Operations

The automation capabilities of the PFi Blade B2 further liberate our production staff of only 3 people, allowing them to focus on operating other machines and enhancing overall production capacity. "The PFi Blade operates without the constant supervision that our previous guillotine required," noted Marie Louise Clausen, Print House Manager. "This operational shift has improved our workflow and increased our output speed."

Competitive Edge

Degn Grafisk has been a loyal Duplo customer, previously utilizing the PFi Blade B3 model. The decision to upgrade to the B2 model stemmed from the need for handling wider rolls, aligning perfectly with the company's vision of further diversification and service delivery enhancement. While they explored larger cutting tables at the DRUPA trade fair, the cost and spatial constraints of those options led them back to Duplo’s effective solutions.

Henrik added, "Service is very important, and we rely on the excellent technical support from Ricoh for all our Duplo machines. Their team has been instrumental in our decision-making process.”

The integration of in-house cutting capabilities also means that jobs requiring spot UV or flood coating, although still outsourced, can now be managed more efficiently with quick turnaround times, which is crucial especially considering the expected increase in business leading up to the local elections this November.

Future Prospects

Looking ahead, Degn Grafisk aims to further solidify its position as a full-service provider in the commercial printing landscape. Today’s other business interests include on-line advertising & social media consultancy, merchandise, signage, design & web shops. Future plans include potential investments in additional printing machines for specialized tasks, such as magnetic labels.

With a total workforce of 15 employees, Degn Grafisk continues to cater to a diverse clientele, stretching beyond local orders to customers across Denmark.  This includes partnerships like that of the Danish Conservative Party, who has its own web portal for ordering online.  Jobs are automatically dropped into a hot folder template, with barcodes & register marks, and sent to the printer, which can then be processed automatically on the PFi Blade B2 & Duplo’s DC646 multi-finisher.

Degn Grafisk’s commitment to quality, efficiency, and customer service solidifies its reputation in the Danish printing industry as it continues to innovate and adapt to market demands.
